Basics

Korean Skincare Basics: The Routine, Step by Step

The famous "10-step routine" scares a lot of people off, but it isn't a dogma, it's a toolkit. The principle behind it is simple: apply from thin to thick, in several light layers instead of one heavy one. That way skin absorbs moisture and active ingredients better, without being overwhelmed.

The order that matters

  1. Cleansing: ideally two steps in the evening (see Double Cleansing), in the morning a mild gel is usually enough.
  2. Toner: restores the pH balance and preps skin for the next steps.
  3. Essence: the heart of Korean skincare: light hydration that boosts everything that follows.
  4. Serum / Ampoule: the concentrated active-ingredient layer for your skin goal.
  5. Eye care: optional, for the delicate under-eye area.
  6. Moisturizer: seals everything in and strengthens the barrier.
  7. Sunscreen: always the last step in the morning. Non-negotiable.

Beginners don't need to do every step. Cleansing, hydration and sun protection are the foundation, the rest gets added as needed.

From our treatment room

The most common cause of "nothing's working" isn't the wrong product, it's too little patience: a routine needs 4–6 weeks to show visible results. We see this with almost every new client.

Cleansing

Double Cleansing: Why Cleanse Twice?

Double Cleansing means: cleanse oil-based first, then water-based. The reason is chemistry: oil dissolves oil. Sunscreen, make-up and the skin's own sebum are oil-based and are hard to remove completely with a gel cleanser alone.

How it works

  1. Step 1, oil or balm: apply to dry skin, massage in gently, then emulsify with water and rinse off. Dissolves SPF, make-up & sebum.
  2. Step 2, water-based: a mild gel or foam removes sweat, dirt and residue without drying out the skin.

The result is skin that's genuinely clean but doesn't feel "squeaky". That tight feeling after washing isn't a sign of cleanliness, it's a sign of a disrupted barrier.

From our treatment room

Double Cleansing makes the most sense in the evening. In the morning, a single mild cleanser is almost always enough. Double-cleansing in the morning too often dries skin out unnecessarily.

Protection

SPF & Sun Protection: The Most Important Anti-Aging Step

If there's only one product you use consistently, make it sunscreen. Studies attribute most visible skin aging (wrinkles, dark spots, loss of elasticity) to UV exposure, not to age itself. No serum in the world can undo what unprotected sun exposure does.

UVA, UVB and PA+++: briefly explained

  • UVB causes sunburn, that's what the SPF value stands for.
  • UVA penetrates deeper, ages the skin, and is present year-round as well as through clouds and window glass. The PA system (PA+ to PA++++) indicates UVA protection.

Korean sunscreens are popular because they combine this protection with an extremely light, non-greasy texture. Many feel more like a serum than a classic sunscreen.

How much and how often?

Rule of thumb: about two finger-lengths of product for the face, every morning, even in winter and at the office. Reapply every 2–3 hours in direct sun.

From our treatment room

Most people apply too little. If you apply SPF 50 thinly, you realistically end up with a fraction of the protection. Better to be generous with a lightweight texture you'll actually enjoy using.

The goal

Glass Skin: What's Really Behind It?

"Glass Skin" describes skin so smooth, plump and hydrated that it reflects light like glass. Importantly, this is not a make-up look and not a filter, but the visible result of a healthy, well-hydrated skin barrier.

Three pillars of Glass Skin

  • Hydration in layers: several light layers of toner, essence and serum instead of one heavy cream ("hydration layering").
  • Gentle exfoliation: regular but mild, so light reflects off a smooth surface.
  • Protected barrier: ingredients like centella and panthenol keep skin calm and resilient.

Glass Skin is therefore less a product than a consequence. Combine hydration, protection and patience, and you get there, regardless of skin type.

Our Korean Glass Skin Facial is built exactly for this: deep cleansing plus intensive moisture layering. You can maintain the instant glow afterwards at home with the right routine.

Problem skin

Acne & Skin Barrier: The Connection Many People Miss

The classic reflex with breakouts: dry it out hard, lots of alcohol, aggressive scrubbing. In the treatment room, we see daily where that leads: to a damaged skin barrier that produces even more sebum and becomes even more sensitive. Acne often gets worse instead of better this way.

What the barrier is, and why it matters

The skin barrier is the outermost protective layer made of skin cells and lipids. When it's intact, it keeps moisture in and irritants out. When it's disrupted, you get redness, tightness, flaking, and, paradoxically, more breakouts.

The Korean approach to acne

  • Cleanse gently instead of stripping oils: mild, pH-friendly cleansers.
  • Soothe with ingredients like centella and panthenol, instead of only fighting the breakout.
  • Give it hydration: even oily, blemish-prone skin needs hydration; a light gel is enough.
  • Treat spot by spot: e.g. with pimple patches, instead of drying out the entire face.
From our treatment room

For inflamed, "stressed city skin", we almost always turn to centella to calm redness right after the treatment. A calm barrier is the precondition for active ingredients to be tolerated at all.

Ingredient know-how

Key Ingredients Explained: Centella, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid & More

A long INCI list doesn't say much, what matters is a handful of key active ingredients and what they do. The stars of Korean skincare:

Centella Asiatica (Cica)

Soothes, calms redness and supports barrier repair. The K-beauty classic for sensitive and irritated skin.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Regulates sebum, refines pores and evens out skin tone. A well-tolerated all-rounder.

Hyaluronic Acid

Binds many times its weight in water, the moisture magnet for plump skin.

Panthenol (Provitamin B5)

Delivers moisture and soothes, ideal after sun exposure, exfoliation, or for stressed skin.

Ceramides

Building blocks of the skin barrier. Fill in "gaps" in the protective layer and reduce moisture loss.

Ginseng

A traditional Korean ingredient: antioxidant, boosts circulation, with an anti-aging reputation.

Alpha Arbutin

Targets dark spots and evens out skin tone, gentler than hydroquinone.

Propolis & Rice

Bee resin and rice extract: nourishing, soothing and glow-giving, a favorite in many K-beauty essences.

From our treatment room

Less is more: better to combine two or three ingredients well than to stack five active serums on top of each other. Never stack strong acids and retinoids on the same night, that overwhelms the barrier.

Philosophy

Korean vs. Western Skincare: The Real Difference

Both approaches have their place, but the mindset differs. Western skincare is often problem-focused: one active ingredient, one targeted problem, a quick fix. Korean skincare thinks preventively and long-term: healthy, resilient skin, cared for through many gentle steps.

Three key differences

  • Hydration before correction: K-beauty puts hydration and the barrier first, not high-dose active ingredients.
  • Layering instead of all-in-one: several light layers instead of one rich cream.
  • Prevention instead of repair: daily sun protection and barrier care take priority over targeted spot treatment.

In practice, we combine the best of both worlds: the gentleness and layering of Korean philosophy with targeted active ingredients where they make sense.

From our treatment room

That's exactly why POW exists: we curate authentic Korean products and translate the philosophy into a routine that fits everyday life in Frankfurt, without forcing 10 steps on anyone.
